6 LINCOLN AUGUST 8-14, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION LINCOLN – Travelers using Old River Road should expect some minor delays or detours while crews continue to install a massive new gas main below the street surface. Police have been detouring vehicles down Commerce Street from Old River Road just before Lincoln High School where National Grid is doing the project. Jennifer Bray, a spokeswoman for National Grid, said crews are working on a 1,700-foot reinforcement project, installing a 12-inch plastic gas main that will run from Commerce Street to George Washington Highway/ Route 116. Bray said the work, which began two weeks ago, is expected to be complete by the end of August. Asked whether the project would improve gas service to local busi- nesses or homes, Bray said the goal is "to ensure greater reliability and the potential for future growth in the area." Though the work is not directly related to the ongoing construction on Lincoln High School, National Grid's contractor has agreed to install new gas service to the high school while they're in the area. Charlie Roberts, project manager for the LHS construction/renovation job, said they're expecting to tap into the newly installed gas line within the next few weeks.
