CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | JULY 11-17, 2019 CUMBERLAND 23 CUMBERLAND – Community members using the Berkeley Oval baseball field and nearby Blackstone River Bikeway will soon benefit from a newly constructed restroom facility courtesy of Cumberland resi- dent Lauren Nigri. Nigri, 17, a rising senior at Cumberland High School, built the so-called "Pretty Potty" as part of her Girl Scout Gold Award project. The Gold Award is the most presti- gious award available to Girl Scouts, inspiring participants to solve issues within their communities. "I knew I wanted to do something that I was passionate about," Nigri said. While brainstorming ideas for her project, inspiration struck on the bike path. "I noticed while running with my mom and my cross-country team that the bike path has no bathrooms," she said. "I thought it would be a good idea to put one along the bike path for the people who use it." While researching the project, she found and ultimately teamed up with Brian Sage, creator of Connecticut-based Pretty Potties. A far cry from an ordinary outhouse or portable bathroom, Pretty Potties come in multiple chic designs and can be rented or purchased for per- manent placement. They're equipped with features ranging from porcelain sinks to stained glass windows adorned with flower boxes, shingled exteriors and working electricity. For her project, Nigri visited Sage in his workshop to help design, build, stain and paint her own Pretty Potty, pulling inspiration from Sage's portfolio of past projects done for weddings and other events. When she ran into some snags with state representatives who would not allow her to place the restroom directly along the bikeway, the location was changed to the baseball field off Martin Street near the former Cumberland Animal Control building. Nigri said she's putting the finish- ing touches on the design, and that it will be moved to its final location once the area is cleared of brush. Ultimately, she said, she plans to donate the Pretty Potty to the town of Cumberland. "I'm glad I stuck through it," said Nigri, who has been working on the project for more than a year now. "It's finally coming up to the finish." Nigri, a member of Troop 66, has been involved in Girl Scouts since she was in kindergarten.
