The 8th annual Ocean State ParaCon will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14, at the Assembly Theater, 26 East Ave., in Harrisville. Presented by RISEUP Paranormal, the convention runs from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. both days. "Paranormal is huge now in our popular culture," Ken DeCosta, chairman of Ocean State ParaCon, told The Valley Breeze. "There are so many shows and so much interest in it." "Rather than just chase ghosts through spooky houses," the life- long Tiverton resident who's been a paranormal investigator for 43 years said the group wanted to create an event as a way "to do something good" for the people of Rhode Island. Each year proceeds from the convention are donated to a char- ity in the state. Over the past seven years, the group has raised $30,000 for various organizations, DeCosta said. Apparently, he's been the target of a couple of school bul- lies and sometimes feels like life is too much. We've talked to him, tried to help him express his feelings, and tried to help him figure out how to solve these problems, but do you have other suggestions? Other than these three episodes, by the way, things in his life seem to be great. He has lots of friends, is liked by his teachers, and doesn't act generally depressed. A: I have one suggestion, but first, a fact: Over the past 50 years, child and teen suicide has increased, per capita, more than 10-fold, and that may well be an underestimate. Two questions ensue: See PARENTING, Page 2 8th annual paranormal event raises funds for Friends Way TIMBER TREE SERVICE, INC.
