Smithfield Scituate Foster Glocester Edition Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ JULY 3-10, 2019 WOONSOCKET – The Smithfield/ North Providence Post 29 American Legion baseball team endured a rough night in its Senior Division doubleheader against Navigant Post 85 last Friday at Renaud Field, as the first-year ballclub dropped the opening game, 7-3, and the nightcap, 12-1. The night started off promising for Post 29, which fell to 1-2. In the first game, Smithfield/NP jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three innings of play, but after that, Post 29 could only manage one more run. "It's a similar pattern that we've had," Smithfield/North Providence manager Paul Rioles said. "We start off very well, score early, and then can't capitalize afterwards. We gave (Navigant) too many chances. A few errors and a few walks turned a three- run lead into a two-run deficit." In the second inning, Zach Collins, who was on the hill for Post 29, led off with a base hit into right field, and after Matt Antunes and Jordan Golato walked to load the bases, Jeremy Gervais singled through the left side of the infield to score Collins, and Chris Olean hit a sacrifice fly to right that drove in Antunes. The bats were still alive in the third inning, as Tommy Sheppard singled to center, stole second, went to third on a groundout, and scored on a base hit to right by Collins. But the next two batters tapped back to the mound. Post 85, which is 3-0, then brought in reliever Nick Langevin, and he locked Smithfield/North Providence up.
