NORTH PROVIDENCE – This town has taken great steps to uncov- er its historic burial grounds and honor the dead in recent weeks, says Blackstone Valley Historical Society cemetery coordinator Ken Postle, but time will tell if that progress will continue. But with the positive comes bad news for some residents who, over time, have built sheds or installed fences along the periphery of some historic cemeteries, not only going inside a 25-foot mandated buffer for excavating but going beyond it, said Postle. Cleanups occurring over the past two weeks have been great, and removing brush to discover where gravestones are even located has been necessary, said Postle, "but what's going to happen with this intrusion" by residents? Mayor Charles Lombardi said most residents were thankful that the town is finally addressing the over- grown burial grounds dotted across North Providence's landscape, but acknowledged that in some cases residents are using some of the prop- erty. NORTH PROVIDENCE – They didn't achieve their ultimate goal of having the town buy a property at 1 Charlotte St. and turn it into a neighborhood park, but members of the Marieville Neighborhood Partnership say the final outcome here was the next best thing. National Grid is pledging to clean up and care for this property off Charles Street and 15 other parcels in the Marieville neighborhood. "The parcel of land at 1 Charlotte St. is not available for sale as that particular location will be needed for future National Grid operational purposes," said National Grid in a statement. "However, we understand the effort and enthusiasm that the Town Council and the Marieville Neighborhood Partnership has garnered for a new playground site, which is why National Grid has offered the town its choice of 16 other parcels (adjacent to the Charlotte Street parcel) available for sale." The hope is that the town will ful- fill its plans for a playground area on any one of these other parcels or a combination of the parcels, said the energy provider.
