Dandeneau was far from panicking last Wednesday, June 5, when his name hadn't been called after 36 of the 40 rounds were in the books on the third and final day of the Major League Baseball Draft. A voice kept telling him to "just stay tuned" – but it wasn't the voice in the back of the head, nor was it the voice of a family member or a close friend. Instead, it was the voice of Eddie Charles, the Northeast Area Scout Supervisor of the Pittsburgh Pirates, who was a supporter of the North Smithfield native and University of Connecticut redshirt senior relief pitcher. "I was texting back and forth with him," Dandeneau recalled last Saturday morning. "I had talked to him (on Wednesday morning) and he said, 'Just stay tuned. I'm pushing for you in the draft room.'" Dandeneau's patience was soon rewarded later that after- noon, when the Pirates drafted him in the 37th round with the draft's 1,114th overall selection. "It's a dream come true," he said. "I knew as a fifth-year senior that if I was going to get picked, it was going to be toward the end (of the draft). DANDENEAU, shown deliver- ing a pitch for the University of Connecticut baseball team, was picked in the 37th round of last week's Major League Baseball Draft by the Pittsburgh Pirates. In 31 games and 50 innings out of the Huskies' bull- pen this spring, Dandeneau posted a 4-2 record with a save and a 2.52 ERA. He struck out 68 batters, walked 22, and saw oppo- nents hit just .228 against him.
