Cumberland Lincoln Edition Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ MAY 23-29, 2019 CUMBERLAND – When the Cumberland High baseball team wrapped up the April portion of its Division I-A schedule with a 3-5 record, the Clippers also finished the month knowing that they weren't going to have the services of their top two starting pitchers for the rest of the season. Arm woes forced junior Brendan Wright and senior Nick Croteau to shut down their mound duties, but just when the future began to look bleak for the Clippers, three young pitchers – junior southpaw Ryan Kirkpatrick and sophomore righties Michael Clapprood and Jackson Walsh – bravely stepped up in their absences, and then some. Thanks to their excellent perfor- mances, the Clippers have been able to take the month of May by storm and reel off an impressive eight-game win streak, with the latest victory coming last Friday afternoon in the continuation of a suspended game at Bentley Field. Senior C.J. Davock's sharply- hit, two-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning, past the dive of East Providence's first baseman, allowed junior Shane Calabro to score the run that lifted the Clippers to a 5-4 victory and kept them atop the battle for second place in the standings with Cranston West.
