Smithfield's Foresti captures Gridiron Club's Lou Cimini Officiating Award IN BRIEF Smithfield's Garces participates in Youth National ID Camp SMITHFIELD – Isabella Garces, who is an 8th-grade student at Gallagher Middle School, was invited to attend a Youth National Team ID Camp (for players born in 2004 and 2005) on Tuesday, May 7, in Mendon, Mass. ID Camps are scheduled through- out the year in key markets across the country, and they are conducted under the direc- tion of U.S. Soccer Talent Identification Managers. The camps are designed to identify and evaluate top talents for the U.S. Youth National Teams. Garces currently plays for the New England Football Club (NEFC) U15 girls' soccer team, which plays in the East Conference's Northeast Division in the U.S. Soccer Development Academy. She plays forward and has scored 21 goals in 27 games. Smithfield YMCA hosts 'Tri at the Y' indoor event June 9 SMITHFIELD – The Smithfield YMCA and Northern R.I. High School Triathlon Club are teaming up to host the inaugural "TRI at the Y" event for all ages on Sunday, June 9, at the YMCA on Deerfield Drive. This USATri60 event will feature an indoor pool swim, indoor spin bike, and a run on a treadmill, but partici- pants will have the option of running outdoor laps. Children ages 7-10 (as of Dec. 31) will compete in a "Splash and Dash" that inculdes a five-minute swim and a 10-minute run, while children ages 11-14 will participate in a sprint triath- lon that features a five-minute swim, 15-minute bike, and 10-minute run. For competitors ages 15 and over, their sprint triathlon will contain a 10-minute swim, 30-minute bike, and 20-minute run. The first wave (for the children) will start at 8 a.m., and the adult waves will begin at 9 a.m. The entry fees are $15 for the "Splash and Dash" and $20 for chil- dren ages 11-14, and for participants ages 15 and over, the fee will be $40 for YMCA members and $50 for non- members. A USAT one-day fee for adults ($15) or an annual membership ($50 for adults, $10 for youngsters) is also needed. Each participant will receive a ROKA drawstring bag, ROKA swim cap, ROKA goggles, and a finisher medal. Awards wil be presented to the top three finishers in each of the three divisions. They're all at valleybreeze.com Smithfield's Ezeama produces 24 points in throwing events during Class B track & field championships WEST WARWICK – Junior Kendra Ezeama took home gold, sil- ver, and bronze medals in the throw- ing events to help lead the Smithfield High girls' outdoor track and field team to a 5th-place finish during last Saturday's Class B championship meet at West Warwick High. Ezeama, who was a state champion in the shot put during the indoor season, scored 24 of her team's 63½ points by winning the shot with a throw of 37 feet, 4½ inches, placing second in the discus with a throw of 107-5, and taking third in the hammer with a throw of 134-8. The Sentinels also received 12 points from senior Grace Beaudry, who took runner-up honors in the 300-meter intermediate hurdles in 47.9 seconds and finished fourth in the 100-meter high hurdles in 16.41 seconds. Adding second places were Sophia Harrison in the pole vault (8-6) and Anna Orticerio in the hammer (139 feet), and Graesyn Fontaine tacked on fourth places in the long jump (16- 3½) and triple jump (33-10). The boys' squad, meanwhile, took seventh place in its meet with 35 points. Sixteen of them came from sophomore Zachary Isble, who took second place in the 100 (11.35 sec- onds) and 200 (23.64) dashes. Zach Semerjian also took third place in the javelin (140 feet) and fourth place in the shot put (43-2) for the Sentinels, and Michael Herchen finished third in the high jump with a 5-foot-6 leap. Ponaganset's top athlete in the meet was junior Ben Mancini, who placed third in the long jump (20-3½), fourth in the triple jump (39-7¾), and sixth in the 200. The Sentinels and Chieftains will send several of their top athletes to the RIIL Championships, which are scheduled for Saturday, June 1, at Brown University.
