WOONSOCKET – The spouse of a high-ranking city official was recently hired for a position at the Woonsocket Police Department after three postings for the job drew 30 applications over a six-month period, The Valley Breeze has learned. James Chamberland, the husband of city Finance Director Christine Chamberland, began work as a janitor in the Woonsocket Police Department on April 8. According to an advertisement by the city Personnel Department, the job has a weekly sala- ry of $625.80 and requires a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Despite its location in the Police Department, the job is considered a municipal position, not a police hire, and applicants were instruct- ed to submit resumes to the Personnel Department. In recent weeks, The Breeze has been contacted by several residents who raised concerns about the hire and questioned whether Chamberland's relationship with a city employee may have played a role in the decision. Brian Bucci, owner of Bucci Development, and his attor- ney, John Mancini, told board members the complex would be divided into two buildings, one with 15 units and the other with six. The buildings would be con- structed on a patch of land behind Planet Fitness and Dowling Village Boulevard that currently includes several single-family homes, only one of which is occupied. "The area, as you've seen if you've been there, is dilapidated," said Mancini. "The developer has not yet incorporated this into Dowling Village." Though the complex will offi- cially be part of the Dowling Village project, the parking lot and Proposed Dowling Village condos would be 'final piece' of development By LAUREN CLEM Valley Breeze Staff Writer lauren@valleybreeze.com See DOWLING, Page 12 CHAMBERLAND ©2019 BREEZE PUBLICATIONS INC.
