CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | MAY 9-15, 2019 SPORTS & RECREATION 23 CUMBERLAND – Cumberland's Elaria Tedeschi, a sophomore at Mount Saint Charles Academy and a mem- ber of the school's Sur La Glace figure skating program and Skating Club of Boston's Act 1 Junior Theater-on-Ice Team, experienced the trip of a lifetime when she traveled to Epinal, France with a 20-person team at the Nation's Cup International Team Competitions that took place from April 21-29. Tedeschi's Act 1 Junior team, a part of Team USA, took second place in the Choreographic team event, as well as the Free Skate event. Finishing first were the Russian National teams from Moscow. The "Ballet of Ice", as it is referred to in Europe, is centered on theatrical and artistic aspects of skating, and it is comprised of 45 teams, 16 from the United States, with each team consisting of 12-20 skaters. The Act 1 team was coached by Brad Vigorito and Jimmy Morgan, as well as international choreographic coach Adam Blake. The daughter of Laura Tedeschi and the late Larry C. Tedeschi of Cumberland, Tedeschi has been skat- ing since the age of five and is cur- rently a regionally ranked USFS (U.S. Figure Skating) competitive skater at the Intermediate level. "Our senior leadership has been really important this year," added Kuncz. "Jason has really helped keep the team together, so that's been much appreciated." The marquee player on the team is sophomore first singles standout Luke Cunningham, who is 9-0 in his match- es this season and boasts an impressive background in the sport that includes several USTA New England cham- pionships that he won as a student at McCourt Middle School. Cunningham was a First-Team All-Division selection last spring. "His skills have improved, and in my opinion, he's matured as a player," added Kuncz. "He's ranked number one in Division II, going into the (state individual) qualifiers as a sophomore, and that's quite a feat. But he's a great kid and we're very lucky to have him." Junior Nathan Courtemanche has also shined at second singles, as has senior Greg Joyce at third singles. Several players have also contributed victories in their doubles matches, starting with senior William Newman and freshman Jack Proctor, and con- tinuing with the likes of junior Justin Wahlers, sophomores Caden Eckman, Brady Moran, and Maxwell Iwuc, and freshman Troy Marsh. The Clippers hosted Toll Gate on Wednesday, and that match kicked off a stretch that will see them play five times in a nine-day span. Today at 3:30 p.m., the Clippers will entertain Portsmouth, and the regular season is expected to end next Thursday, when Cumberland visits Toll Gate at the West Warwick public courts. do you know?
