PAWTUCKET EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | MAY 8-14, 2019 SPORTS & RECREATION 15 Wheeler deals SRA first two losses PAWTUCKET – After finishing the month of April with an 8-0 mark, the St. Raphael Academy baseball team began May with back-to-back losses - to a team fighting to reach .500. A day after suffering a 7-2 defeat to the Wheeler School at the Wheeler School Farm in Seekonk, the Saints were surprisingly swept by the Warriors on a cold, dreary night last Thursday at Slater Park's McConnon Field, as one bad inning paved the way for an 8-7 loss. "We're stumbling lately," SRA head coach Tom "Saar" Sorrentine said. "(Wheeler) has had our number the last two games." With Vets Field being reseeded, the Saints were not allowed to play on it last Thursday, and they played at Slater Park after Tolman's 4 p.m. game against the Prout School. Unfortunately for the Saints, they fell victim to a seven-run rally in the top of the fifth inning by the Warriors, who improved to 5-6 with their two victo- ries over the Saints. The Saints, who traded runs with the Warriors in the first inning, took a 3-1 lead in the fourth by scoring a pair of runs. They also tried to battle back with two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings, but "we left some guys on base early in the game and came up short," Sorrentine said. Southpaw Adam Gomes was on the bump for the Saints and he was not sharp. He only lasted 4 2/3 innings and struggled with his control, as he walked seven batters. He was also responsible for six runs and five hits. "He threw a lot of pitches," Sorrentine noted. "He had too many walks, and he wasn't knocking guys down like he usually does. I had to take him out because he was going to throw too many pitches." The Saints took their 3-1 lead in the fourth on Cam Wilson's two-out, two-run single through the right side of the infield, but the wheels came off the Saints' wagon in the fifth. Wheeler scored five of its seven runs with two outs, and Dan Baruch gave the Warriors the lead with a two-run double to center. "We made a little comeback," Sorrentine said. "It was 8-3, and we got it to 8-7, but too little, too late. I don't know. They have our number, I guess. Devon White and Wilson each fin- Baseball team falls into tie for first in Div.
