A reinforced state prohi- bition on school districts charging students for field trips is causing concern locally, where administra- tors worry that it might severely limit an impor- tant aspect of students' educational experience. In an April 10 memo to the East Greenwich School Department, out- going Commissioner of Education Ken Wagner offered the official opin- ion that districts can't charge students to go on field trips. "For all intents and purposes, it eliminates field trips in a dis- trict the size of ours," said Pawtucket School Committee Chairman Jay Charbonneau, who added that school officials in that city have had only preliminary conversations about how they'll handle the situation. That sentiment was echoed elsewhere in northern Rhode Island. In North Providence, Supt. Joe Goho said he thinks the guidance from the Rhode Island Officials warn that field trips could be on chopping block By ETHAN SHOREY Valley Breeze Managing Editor ethan@valleybreeze.com NORTH SMITHFIELD – It's 6 p.m. on a Monday, and members of the Engage North Smithfield Fiber Gathering group are beginning to filter into the community room at The Meadows apart- ment complex where they meet every week except the first Monday of the month. Among the members are Frank Thomas, a resident of The Meadows who stumbled upon the group one evening having never picked up a pair of knitting needles. Over the past two months, he's learned to knit and crochet and passed his knitting skills on to his wife, who now also attends group meetings. "I saw a sign that it was here. I walked in and said, 'Do you teach men how to knit?' And they said, 'Yeah,'" he recalled with a smile as he worked on a new project among the mostly female gathering.
