While some pro- grams require special equipment or expensive subscription fees, today's fitness landscape offers plenty of options for those looking to get active without spending a lot of cash. Local fitness experts had some tips on how to renew one's spring workout routine using free exercises that can usually be done at home. Lindsay Hanson is a fitness coach and Cumberland native who trains clients to a healthier lifestyle through fitness and eating habits. For those looking to get back into a workout routine after time away, she recom- mended using simple exercises at higher repetitions to increase muscu- lar endurance before reaching for the heavy weights. Her recommended circuits include moves such as planks, squat jumps and push-ups that can be done at home using little or no equip- ment. "I recommend starting with lighter weights or bodyweight exercises and focusing on higher reps (12 to 20) to build up muscular endurance," she said. "Also, incorporating moves that test your balance is a great way to fire up your core with minimal equip- ment." While Hanson usually does her own workouts inside, she said warm weather days are great for exercises that require more open space such as lunges, sprints and athletic agility drills. As an online fitness instructor, Hanson spends much of her day on the computer and said she likes to go for short walks to get movement in during the workday. "Working out at home is certainly more enticing when you can enjoy the warmer weather at the same time. You can really take any bodyweight exercises or workouts you do at home and move them outdoors," she said. Paul Dexter, co-owner of Dexter Training Concepts in North Providence, agreed that low-weight movements at higher repetitions are the way to go for those looking to get back on the fitness track. His program incorporates strength training paired with cardio and good nutrition and focuses on movements that work out several muscles at once, such as squats, push-ups and overhead presses. Each routine, he said, will be unique to the person and their fitness level when they begin. "If you don't have access to a gym, you can buy little weights at Dick's (Sporting Goods) or a kettlebell and put together a little circuit in your backyard," he said. Dexter also emphasized the impor- tance of making fitness and healthy eating year-round activities instead of seasonal. Developing exercise into a habit, he said, will help overcome the negative feelings that sometimes sur- round workouts. "If you make something a ritual, it'll become more habit forming instead of looking at it in a negative light," he said. "You want to make sure exercise and eating healthy doesn't have a negative connotation in your mind." Leslie Billington is an orthope- dic nurse practitioner at Landmark Medical Center and a yoga instructor at Newport Power Yoga who looks at fitness from a different perspective. In her work, she sees many patients who have joint or muscle problems due to age, lifestyle or injury and often recommends stretching to balance out other workout routines or loosen up muscles made tight by too much sit- ting in one place. "If you're doing a lot of physical heavy lifting, you can injure yourself without stretching," she said. "(Yoga) is really good for cross training. It loosens your muscles up, it lengthens them and can actually prevent injury." Feeling stagnant?
