20 SPRING IN THE VALLEY 2019 APRIL 24-MAY 1, 2019 | THE VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER Kitchen and Bath. "It's been crazy the past couple of weeks," Forte said. "People are ready to start up projects again." One trend she's noticed this season are a lot of customers are decluttering and straightening out their homes. People are decorating much more simply these days, she said. "I don't think people like clutter," she said. "Minimal is better." For people short on funds, and who don't want to do a whole kitchen reno- vation, Beck said upgrading counter- tops, adding a backsplash and painting walls are good ways to spruce up the space. Just replacing countertops and appli- ances "gives everything a whole new life," Forte said. Subway tile backsplashes are popu- lar, Beck said, as are quartz counter- tops, which due to their non-porous nature don't need to be sealed like granite. Farmhouse sinks are also in demand. Beck said the style and look are nice and the bigger sink makes it easier to wash pots and pans. Lighting is another easy upgrade that can create a new look in a room. Recess and pendant lighting over a kitchen island are "very popular and decorative," he said. Many folks are doing DIY projects, repurposing items already in their homes, Forte said. "Some people don't have the money to pull apart a kitchen," she said. "They repurpose cabinets by painting them." But beware: painting glossy wood cabinets is a specialty requiring different paints and preparation, so ask an expert first, or hire a painter who specializes in repainting cabinets. Painting old furniture is another way to create a new look. Chalk paint, which doesn't need a primer, can make pieces look old or really new depending on the style, Forte said. A lot of people also paint woodwork, mainly different shades of white. "It's not for everybody," she said. "Some people like it; some people don't." A new floor can also simply change the look of a room. Forte said she's heard people are happy with rub- berized laminate flooring, which is a little cheaper than stone or wood and comes in different colors. For people who want to embark on a larger project to create a totally new space in their home, open floor plans are popular, Beck said.
