Forte says paint is "a relatively inexpensive investment to creating a whole different look in a room." Neutral colors are popular for walls and top cabinets, while bolder colors, such as deep blues, are often used on accent walls, kitchen islands, and bottom cabinets, she said. (BREEZE PHOTO BY MELANIE THIBEAULT) CUMBERLAND – As the warmer weather brings more people outside, it also inspires many to tackle inside home improvement projects. If a total renovation isn't in the budget, there are plenty of simple ways to make a room look brand new this spring. The easiest way to freshen up a room is with paint. Painting walls, cabinetry, and kitchen islands are surefire ways to make a space look new without putting in a ton of labor. "Paint is a relatively inexpensive investment to creating a whole dif- ferent look in a room," Emily Forte, paint department manager at Depault Hardware in Cumberland, told The Valley Breeze. Trending now are neutral colors, particularly shades of gray and white, which can match traditional or more contemporary interiors. As opposed to darker wood like Inject new life into tired indoor spaces By MELANIE THIBEAULT Valley Breeze Staff Writer melanie@valleybreeze.com cherry, light cream or light gray kitchen cabinets will brighten up the space, Kevin Beck, owner of Cumberland Kitchen and Bath, told The Breeze. "The brightness gives you a more happy mood. It's a lot about mood." Millennials in particular have been turning to gray and "because it's so versatile, you can put any color with grays," Forte said. Gray is so popular, Benjamin Moore's 2019 Color of the Year is metropolitan, described as "a light gray with cool undertones," Forte said. "It works with a large range of muted colors." Other popular neutral colors by Benjamin Moore, the only brand Depault sells, include pale oak and balboa mist. One of Forte's favorite paints is a gray called wish. While neutral colors are popular for walls and top cabinets, bolder colors, such as deep blues, are often used on accent walls, kitchen islands, and bottom cabinets, she said. One popular blue is Rhode Island's state color: hale navy. "It gives a pop to the room," Forte said. "It's very traditional and ver- satile." Before beginning a paint project, Forte said she recommends that folks take a sample home to see how it will look in the house. One gallon of paint covers 400- 450 square feet. Repainting a kitchen island takes about a quart of paint, she said.
