14 SPRING IN THE VALLEY 2019 APRIL 24-MAY 1, 2019 | THE VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER A HAWK, at top, one of many birds of prey that can be spotted along the Blackstone River this spring, rests atop a telephone pole. Above, AN OSPREY with an unlucky fish in its talons breaks for lunch along the Blackstone River near Route 122 and the Blackstone Greenway in Lincoln. (BREEZE PHOTOS BY NICOLE DOTZENROD) Birds of prey make a comeback See them on the Blackstone River Signs of spring are everywhere in the Blackstone Valley, even flying overhead. As the temperature rises, so does the number of raptors seen circling the sky over the Blackstone River in search of their next meal. Raptors, or birds of prey, include eagles, hawks, owls, falcons and ospreys, which use their sharp, curved talons for hunting other ani- mals. There's a chance you'll spot one or more of these keen-eyed hunters this spring by taking a trip down the Blackstone River Bikeway or hitting the water on a Blackstone Valley Explorer tour. What exactly might you find, and where should you look? The Valley Breeze asked birder Lauren Parmelee, who serves as Senior Director of Education Programs for the Audubon Society of Rhode Island. Ospreys Ospreys have returned to Rhode Island from their winter in South America, and their numbers are on the rise. In the 1950s and '60s, the use of the pesticide DDT caused the num- ber of birds of prey such as ospreys to decline dramatically. The pesti- cide, which affected the strength of the birds' eggs, was later outlawed, a move that has helped contribute to the recent increase in the num- bers of these birds. The Audubon, which began track- ing osprey populations in 1978, reported only 13 ospreys in Rhode Island that year. In 2018, there were 166 active nests reported. Ospreys tend to nest near and around lakes, rivers and bays. "If you see a bird with a crooked wing hovering over the water and diving in feet-first to catch a fish, that's probably an osprey," said Parmelee. A great way to spot an osprey is aboard the Blackstone Valley Tourism Council's Explorer boat on a guided tour of the river. The tours, which begin in May on the Central Falls-Cumberland line, provide a chance to spot a variety of wildlife while cruising down the river. Marina Flannery, a birder who leads the tours, said she regularly spots two to three pairs of osprey By NICOLE DOTZENROD Valley Breeze Staff Writer nicole@valleybreeze.com See BIRDS, Page 16 1565 Douglas Avenue North Providence, RI 401-353-5555 Fax: 401-353-4807 Douglas Apartments partments Apartments A All of our All of our Apartments include: • Air Conditioning • Heat, Hot Water & Gas Included • Pools, Tennis & Bocci Courts • Plenty of Parking • On-Site Laundry • Friendly On-Site Staff • Snow Removal!
