6 SPRING IN THE VALLEY 2019 APRIL 24-MAY 1, 2019 | THE VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER ELLEN PUCETTI, one of the co-owners of Wright's Dairy Farm, interacts with one of the approximately 130 milk cows on the farm. Top right, LUKE ELLIOTT, of North Attleboro, Mass., gets up close to a cow. (BREEZE PHOTOS BY ROBERT EMERSON) also start producing milk around that time. On any given day, the farm has about 110 cows ready to be milked, while another 20 live in a separate "dry barn" as they prepare to give birth. According to Puccetti, between 10 and 12 calves are born at the farm every month, with around four remaining to become part of the milking herd. The farm does not keep any bulls on the property, instead relying on artificial insemi- nation to continue to produce baby calves. Breeding, explained Puccetti, is a complicated science, with farm- ers looking for certain criteria to breed into future generations. "Because dairy farming has such low margins, the dairy industry has had to become super efficient in so many aspects," she said. Feeding is also a science, with farmers using a mix of hay and corn grown onsite, supplemented with grain, to keep up the cows' strength. With each cow producing 10 gallons of milk per day, Puccetti referred to them as "athletes" who get the best of everything. The cows continue their twice-a- day milking schedule until the sev- enth month of pregnancy, when they move into the "dry barn" to prepare to give birth. With two weeks left to go, they move into the "maternity barn" so farmers can keep a close eye on them until the birth is over. After that, it's back to the herd to keep doing what dairy cows do best. Many things have changed since Wright and Puccetti's great-grandfa- ther, George Wright, first purchased the property in 1896, but one thing remains the same. The farm relies on its cows as the future of its dairy business, which makes raising a calf one of the most important invest- ments of time and money they can make. "These animals are being raised to come back here as milking cows," said Wright. "These are the future of the business."
