PAWTUCKET – Mayor Donald Grebien and members of his admin- istration say they see scooters and bicycles as fun and useful alternative modes of regular transportation, and they're asking for measures to pro- mote such transportation within city limits. Wilder Arboleda, spokesman for the mayor, said a proposed amend- ment to the Pawtucket Code of Ordinances would clear up a "bit of an oddity or gray area" and create "a little bit more clear-cut" rule on such ride-sharing programs. "The city of Pawtucket is always looking at opportunities to provide different modes of transportation to our residents," he said. "We are cur- rently looking into bringing scooter and bicycle programs that would provide our community with other affordable modes of transportation." The proposed amendment to the ordinance would allow for scooters and bicycles to be used on side- walks so long as they are approved, upon filing a permit application, by the director of the Public Works Department, said Arboleda. As reported two weeks ago by The Breeze, officials are seeking similar opportunities to what a new stadium would have done for Pawtucket's downtown area, hop- ing a broad request for proposals, allowing multiple partners and sites, will yield viable results. Matt Sheaff, spokesman for the R.I. Commerce Corp., and Dylan Zelazo, of Mayor Donald Grebien's administration, both said this week that no bid submissions will be opened prior to a 2 p.m. deadline on Thursday.
