North Smithfield High School students take first place at state History Day competition NORTH SMITHFIELD – Two groups of students from North Smithfield High School are headed to the National History Day com- petition in Washington, D.C. after their projects took first place in their categories at the state competition at Rhode Island College on March 23. Liz Jalette and Emma Grant will showcase their exhibit on the Equal Rights Amendment and its near real- ization, and a group of five students including Michael Duffy, Jarrod Dube, Jason Meriwether II, Matthew Hetu and Timothy Duffy will offer an original group performance about the impact of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s assassination titled "Dr. King's Tragic Sacrifice for the Greater African American Triumph." Other NSHS students who com- peted at the state level include Morgan Kruzan, Colby Girard, Rita Marcotte, Kaitlyn Walsh and Katelyn Williams. The theme for this year's competition was "Triumph and Tragedy." The students will hold several fundraisers to support their trip to National History Day, which takes place at the University of Maryland in June. On April 27, there will be a clamcakes and chowder dinner hosted by Mickey G's Clam Shack in the NSHS cafeteria from 5 to 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 for adults and $10 for children younger than 10 and can be purchased in advance or that evening. Chicken fingers and fries will also be available. That same night, a paint night hosted by the Proud Painter will also take place in the cafeteria from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tickets for the paint night are $40 each and must be purchased in advance. Raffle tickets will also be available.
