20 SPORTS & RECREATION APRIL 18-24, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION Northmen take another swing at D-II At 0-4, baseball team adjusts to new league after superb two-year stint in D-III By KAYLA PANU Valley Breeze Sports Writer NORTH SMITHFIELD – It's been an adjustment so far for the North Smithfield High baseball team in its return to Division II this spring after spending the last two seasons in D-III, posting a 27-7 regular-season record, and reaching the championship series each June. So far, the Northmen are 0-4, but their first three games had been close. Head coach Jon Leddy said that he "saw some good things and bad things" in his team's home-and-away series against Woonsocket in the opening week of the season, which the Northmen dropped by scores of 3-0 and 7-4, and the same could be said for their series last week against Scituate. After suffering a 3-1 defeat to the Spartans last Thursday that saw junior pitcher Quinn Parent deliver a three- hitter in an admirable performance, the Northmen were dealt a 10-2 loss to Scituate the following afternoon at Manning Field. "I think we definitely deserve to be back up, but it's going to be a challenge, no doubt," Leddy added. "We lost a lot of talent from the last couple of years, but we have some good talent coming back. We have a good group of juniors who have seen significant varsity time, so that experience helps, and we have three solid seniors that we need a big year from."
