North Smithfield, Blackstone and Woonsocket Edition APRIL 18-24, 2019 Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ WOONSOCKET – Michael Ethier remembers well the glory days of the Mount Saint Charles Academy boys' lacrosse program. He was a junior on the Mounties' team that made its RIIL debut in 2007 and posted a 7-5 record in its inaugural Division II season. The following spring, he helped lead the Mounties to a 12-1 record and the D-II championship, and in the next two seasons, Mount reached the D-II title game. Unfortunately for the Mounties, after they went 9-4 in 2011, they fell on tough times and were unable to post a winning record over the next six seasons. But Ethier, who had coached Lincoln High in 2013 and '14 and spent some time as Mount's middle school coach, took over the team last year and helped lead the Mounties to a 7-6 record that was one win shy of qualifying for the playoffs. This year, Ethier and the Mounties are looking to better their record and return to the postseason after a year's absence with a talented roster that's rich in experience and youth, and nearly a third into their season, it appears that they're heading in the right direction. Last Thursday afternoon, the Mounties improved their record to 3-1 by netting a 7-5 triumph over Scituate. Sophomore midfielder Ethan Leclaire scored four goals, two in the final seven minutes of play to give Mount a bit of breathing room, and his classmate, goalie Matthew Prew, turned away 16 of the 21 shots he faced in a brilliant effort.
