Pawtucket Edition Sports & Recreation @ APRIL 17-23, 2019 BREEZE PHOTOS BY KAYLA PANU Left, St. Raphael Academy starting pitcher JILLIAN SERRA fired a two-hitter in last Friday's 12-1 win over East Greenwich that saw her strike out six batters and allow three walks and an unearned run. Armed and dangerous Young pitchers help SRA softball team cop 3-0 record in opening week of D-II season By KAYLA PANU Valley Breeze Sports Writer PAWTUCKET – Thanks to phenomenal pitching and timely hitting, the St. Raphael Academy softball team has rolled out to a 3-0 start in the opening week of the Division II season. After opening the season with a 3-0 victory over Scituate and a 5-0 triumph over Cranston East, the Saints rolled to a 12-1 win over East Greenwich last Friday afternoon at the Hank Soar Complex in a game that was stopped after 4½ innings by the mercy rule. That's not bad for a young squad that doesn't have its full roster yet. Two starters are out with injuries, including junior captain Saylor Costa, one of five starters who are back from last year's 12-5 team. The Saints also have a transfer from Bay View, junior Chloe Raposo, who is not eligible yet to play, and they graduated last season's entire outfield. "We are a young team with one senior, two juniors, Silveira, Benros turn in excellent performances at Boston Marathon BOSTON – Pawtucket's Fernando Silveira's first trip to the Boston Marathon was a successful one on Monday afternoon, as the 43-year-old runner toured the legendary 26.2-mile course in a time of 3:15:20. It was the second marathon for Silveira, who just missed qualifying for next April's race by 20 seconds. Silveira's first race was the Charles River Marathon last September, which he finished in 3:13:34. Another Pawtucket runner, 48-year- old John Benros, completed the race for the sixth time in the past seven years and posted a 3:59:33 clocking that marked the fourth time he fin- ished the race in under four hours.
