4 PAWTUCKET APRIL 17-23, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | PAWTUCKET EDITION PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket resident Soraia Hazard, a junior at Davies Career & Technical High School, is Rhode Island's 2019 Youth of the Year. Hazard said she had to keep pinch- ing herself to prevent the tears from flowing during the April 9 competi- tion, which took place in the Rhode Island Convention Center Rotunda. She represented the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket, contending with five other candidates from around the state for the chance to secure a $5,000 scholarship. Presenting before a panel of judges, Hazard, the daughter of Sandra Barbosa of Pawtucket, spoke about the positive influence the Boys & Girls Club has been on her life since she became a member at age 6. "At first I was really shy and didn't expect the club to impact me the way it did," she said. "I thought of it as a place I'd go after school before I went home ... it ended up becoming my home." Hazard said the club helped her find her voice, gain confidence and acquire important life skills, ranging from healthy living habits to finan- cial management advice. She was exposed to public speaking through the club's Torch Club, the nonprofit's leadership group for children ages 11 to 13. Today, she serves as president of the Keystone Club, the leadership development program for teens ages 14 to 18. The lessons learned at the Boys & Girls Club went beyond hard skills, Hazard said. She became emotional during her interview with the Youth of the Year judges when she spoke about the ways the club helped her navigate becoming a blended family in elementary school. "They helped when my stepdad and his kids moved in. I was stand- offish, even rude at first," she admit- ted, continuing, "The Boys & Girls Club helped me see that they were coming into our lives to impact us in the right way. They helped us get along, helped with homework and made sure we bonded as a family outside of the house." At the time, Hazard said she was cripplingly shy. "In a big family, everybody has an opinion to share, but I didn't feel like I knew how to express what I was feeling," she said. "The Boys & Girls Club showed me how to say what I have to say in the right way. I learned you don't have to gloss over things, and that by using your voice you can make an impact. The club also taught her how to set goals for her future. By the time she reached middle school, she was already focused on graduating high school; and by freshman year of high school her goal was to finish college. She said she would be the first of her mother's children to make it to col- lege. She hopes to visit Howard University this summer, her top choice school. Hazard said she'd love to have the experience of attending a traditionally black school. "Just to see a whole bunch of predominantly black kids helping each other thrive and meet that level of excellence together," she said. She's untapped a recent interest in occupational therapy; she said she has wanted to be a dermatologist since 7th grade. At the time, Hazard learned that her best friend's father might have skin cancer. "She was crying hysterically and I didn't know what to say. I told her when I get older I'll help. I'll become a skin doctor so we can help your dad," she said. Some people dismiss dermatology as the "pimple pop- pers," she said, but "your skin is the barrier that protects you from infec- tions. If you had no skin you couldn't survive." Once licensed, Hazard said she hopes to return to R.I. to provide affordable dermatology care to peo- ple in her community. Hazard was named the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket's Youth of the Year in March before moving onto the statewide competition on April 9. As this year's winner, she'll receive a $5,000 scholarship, renew- able all four years of college. She will now move onto the regional compe- tition this June in New York for the chance to qualify for nationals, com- peting against students from 14 states. State-level participants were Nasir Daleg of the Boys and Girls Club of Northern Rhode Island (Cumberland, Lincoln and Woonsocket), Kiara Noke of the Boys and Girls Club of Newport, David Capbiano of the Boys and Girls Club of East Providence and Olivia Martinelli of the Boys and Girls Club of Warwick. The Boys & Girls Club of America's Youth of the Year com- petition is the nonprofit's signature program to foster a new generation of leaders. For Hazard, leadership means the willingness to "take on roles that help others thrive." It's also about leading by example, she said. "I feel like I'm setting a good example for my younger siblings, showing them how to focus in school and teaching them that helping out at the Boys & Girls Club can help get you to other places," she said. "I would never have this if I stayed at home."
