2 PAWTUCKET APRIL 17-23, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | PAWTUCKET EDITION PAWTUCKET – Pawtucket police issued an average of more than 16 tickets per month for vio- lations of the "hands-free driving law" for the first seven months the law was in effect, from June through December of 2018. That average dropped to 12 tick- ets per month for the first quarter of 2019, with another three viola- tions for the first 12 days of April. Diverging from some other departments, Pawtucket police have given very few written or verbal warnings, including no warnings in the first month of the new law last June, when 24 cita- tions were handed out. There were 155 total citations given to motorists from June 1, 2018, through April 12, 2019, according to data provided by Pawtucket Traffic Division Sgt. David Connors to The Valley Breeze. There were nine written warnings, states the synopsis from police, plus another nine verbal warnings. All of the written warn- ings came prior to the start of 2019, while most of the verbal warnings have come since the start of the year. For comparison's sake, Pawtucket police have handed out substantially fewer violations than police in neighboring North Providence, where police have issued 396 violations. The city is ahead of nearby Cumberland by four tickets, with Cumberland police handing out 151 citations over about the same period. The following are the violations and warnings since the law pro- hibiting motorists from holding their phone while driving went into effect last year: • July 2018 - 18 violations, one written warning, and two verbal warnings • August - 18 violations, zero warnings • September - eight violations, one written warning, no verbal warnings • October - 26 citations, three written warnings, and no verbal warnings • November - six citations, four written warnings, no verbal warn- ings • December - 14 tickets, no warnings • January 2019 - 13 citations, no written warnings, two verbal warn- ings • February - 10 violations, no written warnings, two verbal warn- ings • March - 14 tickets, no written warnings, three verbal warnings • April (through April 12) – three violations, no warnings Tickets for 'hands-free' violations see a drop By ETHAN SHOREY Valley Breeze Managing Editor ethan@valleybreeze.com Place your classified ad online at classifieds.valleybreeze.com Alzheimer's support group meets April 24 PAWTUCKET – The Alzheimer's Family Caregiver Support Group will meet at the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, 420 Main St., on Wednesday, April 24, at 10 a.m. The group meets the last Wednesday of each month at 10 a.m. with Executive Director of the Leon Mathieu Senior Center, Mary Lou Moran.
