CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | APRIL 11-17, 2019 SPORTS & RECREATION 25 Boys and girls ages 9-14 from across Rhode Island were named state champions of the 2019 Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championships on Sunday, March 24, at Bishop Hendricken High School. Councils across the state sponsored local competi- tions during the past few months, with the winners advancing to the state level. Each contestant was allowed 25 free throw attempts in the contests. Ties were settled by successive rounds of five free throws per contestant until a winner emerged. Among the local state champions were, from left, Cumberland's NOAH NICHOLS (boys' 13-year-old division), Lincoln's LAUREN CIPRIANO (girls' 12-year-old division), and Lincoln's AHTIANA BENWAY (girls' 14-year- old division). Cumberland's James Mallon was also the state champion is the boys' 12-year-old division. Local youngsters win Knights of Columbus free throw state championships The Lincoln Parks and Recreation Department recently crowned its Youth Hoop Basketball (grades 5 and 6) champion, the NATIONALS, who put together a fantastic season. This season, Walsh is batting .304 (24-for-79) in 22 games, with 18 runs scored, eight dou- bles, three triples, four homers, and 20 RBIs.
