CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | APRIL 4-10, 2019 SPORTS & RECREATION 21 The CUMBERLAND JDL (JUNIOR DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE) BOYS' HOCKEY TEAM completed an undefeated season on March 15 by netting a 4-1 victory over Mount Saint Charles Academy in the championship game at the Rhode Island Sports Center on Route 146 in North Smithfield. The Cumberland team, which is made up of 6th, 7th, and 8th graders from the town, went 12-0 in league play, outscoring its opponents by an 86-19 margin, before capturing both its playoff games. Cumberland also won last year's JDL summer championship. The members of the team are, in front from left, Nolan Costa, Luke Smolan, Matthew Colette, Jared Johnson, Sam Lopes, Jacob Lopes, Ian Pomfret, and Matthew Medeiros; in back, coach Jeff Robbins, Seth Perron, Andrew Palma, Colin Railey, Kyle Smolan, Jamie Robbins, Troy Senn, Ty Anderson, Christian Oliveira, and Hayden Almeida. Cumberland JDL boys' hockey team wraps up undefeated season with championship IN BRIEF Cumberland's Drezek breaks UMass-Lowell record in steeplechase RALEIGH, N.C. – Cumberland's Ben Drezek, a sophomore distance runner on the UMass-Lowell men's outdoor track and field team, set a school record in the 3,000-meter steeplechase last Friday at the Raleigh Relays at North Carolina State University's Paul Derr Track by becoming the first athlete in the program's history to crack the nine- minute mark. Drezek took 11th place out of 65 competitors in a time of 8:59.98 to break a 10-year-old school record by 1.95 seconds. His previous-best time 9:03.74, which he posted at last spring's America East Championships. Drezek, who graduated from Cumberland High in 2017 as the state record holder in the 2,000- and 3,000- meter steeplechases, was also recently named to the America East's Indoor Track and Field All-Academic Team. Drezek, who holds a GPA of 3.959 GPA, has been named to the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll in each of his semesters with the River Hawks. Eaton becomes RIC women's lax team's all-time saves leader KEENE, N.H. – Cumberland native and Rhode Island College senior goalkeeper Julia Eaton became the women's lacrosse team's all-time leader in saves last Saturday afternoon, as she turned away 17 shots in the Anchorwomen's 20-4 loss on the road to Little East Conference foe Keene State University. Eaton, who is a 2015 graduate of Cumberland High, ended the game with 635 career saves. She broke the record of 627 that was held by Taryn Carbone, who played from 2011-14.
