Cumberland Lincoln Edition Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ APRIL 4-10, 2019 CUMBERLAND – It was a little more than a year ago when Stephanie Ribeiro was putting together a solid preseason with the Seattle Reign FC of the NWSL (National Women's Soccer League) and looking forward to finally mak- ing her professional debut after missing the entire 2017 season with a knee injury. The former Cumberland High All-State and University of Connecticut All-American striker eventually made her pro debut later that spring, but she did so on the other side of the globe in Norway for a team in the Toppserien, the country's top tier of women's soc- cer. The adjustment not only to a new league, but also to a new culture was tough at first for the 24-year- old player, and so has a stress reac- tion in her lower back this spring that has sidelined her for the past six weeks and prevented her from taking the field with her new club, Avaldsnes Idrettslag, but Ribeiro's kept her head up and stayed posi- tive and optimistic. "Honestly, right now, I'm over- joyed," Ribeiro said last Friday night. "I'm on a good club and it's awesome. I'm really enjoying it, and the girls are great. The club did struggle last year, but this year seems different, and the girls and coaches are hopeful for this sea- son."
