CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | APRIL 4-10, 2019 CUMBERLAND 11 Howard Road Bridge construction set for May CUMBERLAND – Reconstruction of the small but important Howard Road Bridge, closed in June of 2017, is now set to start in May, and it won't reopen to the public until next year. At the March 20 Town Council meeting, Council President Peter Bradley read an update from Chief of Staff Linda Teel stating that the Rhode Island Department of Transportation will begin the proj- ect in May and have it substantially complete by December. "We have clarified with our con- tacts that substantial completion does not mean that the bridge will be open to traffic at that time," wrote Teel. RIDOT spokesman Charles St. Martin told The Valley Breeze in January that the bridge is set for total completion by summer of 2020, when it would reopen to traffic. This is a historical bridge, and part of the process involves removing and dismantling the truss structure and sending it out for repairs, then repainting and reinstalling it. After that, a number of new steel compo- nents will have to be installed. The Howard Road Bridge con- nects Abbott Run Valley Road in Cumberland with neighboring Massachusetts. It was shut down two years ago due to its badly deteriorat- ing structure after it was discovered that one end of it had dropped about four inches. The closure necessitated a significant detour. Cumberland owns the bridge, but RIDOT agreed to replace it. The state agency originally had it on the calendar to fix in 2023. Aetna Bridge will complete the $1.66 million proj- ect. Appointments made to School Building Committee CUMBERLAND – Officials have made their appointments to the Public School Renovation Building Committee responsible for carry- ing out upgrades to local schools through an $83 million bond approved by taxpayers last fall. The committee held its first meet- ing March 19 and will hold another one tonight, April 4, starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Cumberland High School Transitional Building. • The Town Council, choosing two members of four candidates, Paul Gusmini, Brian McCourt, Mark Lindgren and Steve Sylvan, voted in February to appoint Gusmini and Lindgren. • Mayor Jeff Mutter appointed Rick Beaulieu and Amy Penco. • The School Department appoint- ed School Committee member Steve Hess. The committee's work is expected to get going in earnest this fall.
