4 NORTH PROVIDENCE APRIL 3-9, 2019 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH PROVIDENCE EDITION said she told them to come up with a proposal and present it, which they did, including event details and a budget. Ashley Siravo, a junior at North Providence High School, said she came up with the idea to bring the Easter egg hunt back after recalling how great it was when she was a child. Being in a position to make change as a member of the commis- sion, and now having a niece of her own, she began asking why the town doesn't host one anymore. Vickers then told her to come up with a business plan to be presented to Mayor Charles Lombardi. "The mayor's always super helpful and on board with everything we do," said Siravo. Abigail Medeiros, a senior at NPHS, said mem- bers of the Youth Commission are always brainstorm- ing new events to bring fun to the town, and they thought this one would be a fun one to host. There's really not a lot going on for the Youth Commission in the spring, other than weekly meet- ings, she said, so this made a perfect time of year to add something new. Late summer and fall are the busiest time of year for town events. Two spring events are bunched together, with Youth Commissioner members set to help put on Mayor Lombardi's Fishing Derby two days after the egg hunt, on April 15 from noon to 3 p.m. at Geneva Pond in Notte Park. Siravo said youth commissioners will be volunteering at the event, including running activities. The event will include the egg hunt, raffles, and a visit from the Easter Bunny. Medeiros and Siravo said they're proud of what the Youth Commission accomplishes on a yearly basis, helping the adults in town put on major events. The group has grown a lot, said Medeiros. "All the kids want to impact the town in a positive way," she said, especially as they see the younger generation enjoying the fruits of their labor. Siravo said the Youth Commission is able to keep expanding the events it participates in because the group itself keeps growing. When she started, she could have counted on two hands the number of teens in the group. "We can get a lot more done now," she said. "We're reaching our potential." The Youth Commission con- tributes to quality of life in North Providence in many ways, said Siravo, volunteering not only to put on events but with many other community service projects around town. Families participating in the April 13 Easter egg hunt should bring their own basket or bag to put the eggs in.
