NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | MARCH 28-APRIL 3, 2019 THE VALLEY 9 State police arrest 62 for welfare fraud SCITUATE – The Rhode Island State Police last week arrested 62 individuals for welfare fraud. Among those arrested were seven residents of Woonsocket and one resi- dent of North Smithfield. According to police, all of those arrested applied for and obtained public assistance without disclosing that they had outstanding felony warrants against them, a violation of federal regula- tions that would have resulted in their not receiving benefits. The felony warrants, according to a press release, were for a range of vio- lent and non-violent crimes, including attempted murder, failure to register as a sex offender, shoplifting and nar- cotics violations. State police are cur- rently searching for 26 other individu- als accused of fraudulently obtaining public assistance. The 88 suspects allegedly collected $469,000 in public benefits over the past several years. Col. James Manni, superintendent of the R.I. State Police, said police have been cracking down on public assistance fraud and will not toler- ate abuse of the SNAP program and other state benefits. The arrests were the result of an investigation by state police working with inves- tigators from the Department of Administration.
