A tasty treat WOONSOCKET – The former Milford Federal Savings and Loan Association building on Diamond Hill Road could become the home of a new medical marijuana dispen- sary – that is, if a representative of one local company can convince city and state officials to allow the proposal in the currently vacant space. Edward Roy, director of security for Warwick-based Medici Products and Solutions, is hoping his com- pany can scoop up one of six medi- cal marijuana dispensary licenses currently under consideration in the General Assembly and open a dispensary at the Woonsocket Plaza site. Roy, a former Woonsocket police officer, pitched the idea to city officials during a meeting of the City Council on Monday. The former land- fill has been under federal and state oversight since the 1980s, when it was capped and contaminants on the sight were determined to pose a potential risk to the environment and public health. The report, expected to be available to the public this fall, will be the fifth five-year review report issued for the site. Landfill and Resource Recovery is one of three contaminated superfund sites listed on the federal National Priority List in North Smithfield. In addition, the EPA and the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management oversee cleanup efforts on several other properties affected by well water contamination or the spread of industrial chemicals. Some of these properties have reached a state of partial or full remediation, but for most, cleanup efforts will continue for the foreseeable future.
