Serving Pawtucket Breeze THE VALLEY FREE MARCH 27-APRIL 2, 2019 PAWTUCKET – A local high school is no longer pursuing a potential relocation to 217 Main St., the former home of the Anchor Recovery Center, citing the fact that someone else is in the process of buying it. Toby Shepherd, executive direc- tor at the Nowell Leadership Academy, told The Breeze that the charter school for pregnant, parent- ing and underserved youth was looking to consolidate campuses located in Providence and Central Falls, and was considering the space at 217 Main St. as a new headquar- ters. The school is no longer research- ing that possibility, said Shepherd on Monday. "My understanding that the seller of that property has identified another buyer," he said. "We don't have any other updates to share at this time on a potential move for us." The property, owned by the recently departed Narragansett Bay Insurance Company, is considered a key to redevelopment efforts along Main Street. A majority of members on the City Council seem to oppose making this a mandate for residen- tial developers within this Transit-Oriented Development (TOD) zone, saying such a move could set up an instant roadblock to what the city is hoping for around the train station, which is transformative redevelop- ment of vacant and abandoned prop- erties. City Councilor Terry Mercer, head of the council's ordinance subcom- mittee, said he agreed last week to forward the proposal to a future full public hearing of the council, but remains opposed to it.
