North Providence Edition Sports & Recreation DECEMBER 12-18, 2018 valleybreeze.com @ NORTH PROVIDENCE – The good news for first-year North Providence High head girls' bas- ketball coach Jen Goulding is that she will have the top seven play- ers coming back from last season's squad that repeated as Division III- North regular-season champions and returned to the D-III semifinals. The bad news is that Goulding and her returning cast will be com- peting for a different championship this winter – the Division II title. After posting a 29-7 regular-season record over the past two seasons, the Cougars have been elevated to the state's second division, along with defending D-III champion Tiverton, Shea, and Classical. Also joining the Cougars in the new- look 18-school league are two teams who are dropping from D-I, Cumberland, Cranston East, and Coventry. The last time the Cougars played in D-II, they were 2-16 during the 2015-16 season and 5-13 the year before that. But they also had winning seasons there during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 seasons, and they won back-to-back Division II-Central regular-season titles in the mid-2000s. Only time will tell if they can repeat that success. Goulding, who is a science teacher at the high school, took last winter off from coaching after serving as Jerry Rubino's assistant since he took over as the team's head coach in the 2009-10 season. But when Rubino decided to step down from BREEZE PHOTO BY ERIC BENEVIDES North Providence High junior standout STEPHANIE SAUCIER, shown in action dur- ing a game last season at Burrillville High, is back for her third sea- son as the Cougars' point guard. Saucier and her teammates, which had won the last two Division III-North regular-season titles, will begin their Division II season next Monday night in Woonsocket against Mount Saint Charles. The Cougars are returning to the state's middle division for the first time since the 2015-16 season. Welcome back After winning back-to-back Div. III regular-season titles, veteran girls' hoop team earns promotion to D-II By ERIC BENEVIDES Valley Breeze Sports Editor sports@valleybreeze.com Continues on next page Do you have a family member who loves their Valley Breeze newspaper, but is heading south for winter?
