NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | DECEMBER 6-12, 2018 WOONSOCKET 5 Drug trafficking kingpin receives 20 years WOONSOCKET – Claudio Valdez of Woonsocket was sentenced to 20 years in federal prison last Wednesday, Nov. 28, after plead- ing guilty to running a large-scale heroin and cocaine trafficking ring in Rhode Island, Massachusetts and Connecticut. Valdez, 46, and his brothers, Hector Valdez of Woonsocket and Juan Valdez of Milton, Mass., were arrested in April 2017 following a seven month-long investigation by the FBI Safe Streets Task Force in conjunction with local and state police. The three brothers pled guilty in U.S. District Court in Providence. Immigration detainers have been lodged against the three men, Dominican nationals who re-entered the country illegally after a previous conviction of felony drug crimes. Juan Valdez is scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, Dec. 14, and Hector Valdez is scheduled to be sen- tenced on Friday, Jan. 18. River Falls will be sold to new owner WOONSOCKET – River Falls restaurant is expected to be sold to a new owner after a transfer of the business's liquor license was approved by the City Council on Monday. Hevan Patel of Norwood, Mass., owner of Meldia Maa Inc., will pur- chase the successful city restaurant and building and continue operating it as River Falls, an attorney for the purchaser told the City Council on Monday. Patel is the owner of several businesses around Rhode Island and Massachusetts and will continue to operate the restaurant with similar hours and menu and the possible addition of a breakfast service, according to the attorney. The restaurant and building are currently owned by city real estate developer Gary Fernandes. The purchaser's license application indi- cates a loan of $1.6 million has been approved for the purchase. Former police officer denied appeal in child abuse case WOONSOCKET – A former Woonsocket police officer previously convicted of abusing his nine-year- old half sister will serve 10 years after the state Supreme Court denied his appeal Nov. 30. Patrick Cahill, 29, was found guilty of child abuse and sentenced to 10 years at the ACI with six months to serve in 2014, but execution of his case was stayed pending the outcome of an appeal in Supreme Court. A former police officer, Cahill has been listed as suspended without pay since the charges were brought in 2012, as the Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights does not allow the city to fire him until the appeals process is com- plete. In a separate incident, Cahill pled no contest to charges of simple assault in 2017 after he was caught assaulting a student at Woonsocket High School, where he volunteered as an assistant football coach. Check out our NEW GRInCH InspIred MEnU Exclusively at IHOP (Limited time only) WHEN EMPLOYEES FOLLOW SUIT If you follow the news, you know that employees are increasingly resorting to legal means to sue their employers for alleged discrimination. With this in mind, Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) covers businesses against workers' claims that their legal rights as employees have been violated. EPLI provides protection against lawsuits for sexual harassment, discrimination, wrongful termination, breach of employment contract, failure to employ or promote, wrongful discipline, wrongful infliction of emotional distress, and other claims. While most suits are filed against large corporations, smaller companies are also vulnerable to such lawsuits. In recognition of this fact, some insurers provide this coverage as an endorsement to their Businessowner's Policy (BOP), while other companies offer EPLI as a stand-alone coverage. Small or new businesses are often the most vulnerable to employment claims because they often lack a legal department or employee handbook detailing the policies and procedures that guide hiring, disciplining, or terminating employees. For more information, please call HUNTER INSURANCE, INC. at 769-9500, or visit our agents at 389 Old River Rd., Lincoln. We are a small business, so we know how to address the issues and concerns of similar companies. We even have insurance programs tailored for general contractors, funeral directors, and restaurant owners. NOTE: Business owners are at risk of an employment claim from the moment they interview a prospective employee.
