6 SMITHFIELD NOVEMBER 29-DECEMBER 5, 2018 | VALLEY BREEZE & OBSERVER | SMITHFIELD SCITUATE FOSTER GLOCESTER spring, waiting for better weather after a rainy and wet fall. The stump and brush cleanup will occur in the spring before paving of the new lot and entrance. Swain said plantings will be installed in April. More than 100 trees were removed to clear out the area for the new parking lot and entrance, but Swain said many of the felled trees were unhealthy, dead, or non-native. The library plans to plant approxi- mately 100 New England native and indigenous plantings, such as but- terfly bushes to attract butterflies and birds, once construction is complete. Evergreens will be added along Spring Street to create a buffer for noise and light. The beloved Sequoia in the center of the parking lot will remain, as well as the dogwood trees by the library entrance. Swain said she would attach herself to the trees before she lets anything happen to them. The Sequoia will remain in a "Central Park-like" island, with the expanded lot surrounding the tree. People who come to the library feel ownership of the building, Swain said. With a capacity of 201 people, the 43 spaces in the lot left it feeling crowded during busy hours. "It's their library. This project is desperately needed for them," Swain said. The Greenville Library is providing informational bookmarks regarding the lot expansion. Many residents asked Swain about the stone wall lining the back of the library's lot, and she assured them that though it is not a historic wall, it will be rebuilt and remain on the property. There is no plan for expansion of the library itself at this time. Swain said the Champlin Foundation is extending a $700,000 project grant until next year to continue funding the lot expan- sion. Swain said the groups is "very pleased," with the progress done so far, which includes razing of the adjoining home.
