Smithfield Scituate Foster Glocester Edition Sports & Recreation valleybreeze.com @ NOVEMBER 29-DECEMBER 5, 2018 Marsella wins IBA Americas championship Smithfield native improves record to 11-0 with third-round stoppage LINCOLN – Smithfield super lightweight boxer Anthony Marsella Jr. struck gold in his first professional main event bout last Wednesday, Nov. 21, at the Twin River Event Center by winning the vacant International Boxing Association (IBA) Americas championship. Marsella, who graduated from Smithfield High in 2013, improved his record to 11-0 by notching the fifth stoppage of his career at the three- minute mark of the third round of his fight with Mexican challenger Jorge Rodriguez, who was unable to answer the bell for the fourth round. Rodriguez (10-4) landed a few qual- ity punches in the second round, but aside from that, the bout clearly belonged to Marsella, who tried to put away Rodriguez in the closing seconds of the third round by pinning him into a corner with a series of punches to his head. Rodriguez's corner eventually threw in the towel before both fighters came out for the next round. The victory capped a four-win 2018 for Marsella, who turned pro nearly 2½ years ago after an outstanding amateur career that saw him become a four-time Western New England Golden Gloves champion. do you know?
