6 ENTERTAINMENT NOVEMBER 8-14, 2018 | VALLEY BREEZE LIVING EDITION BRT presents Sandeep Das and The HUM Ensemble CUMBERLAND – Blackstone River Theatre, 549 Broad St., will present "Delhi to Damascus," a concert celebrating the ties between India and Syria, featuring Sandeep Das and The Hum Ensemble on Saturday, Nov. 10, at 8 p.m. "Delhi to Damascus" is a celebra- tion of the historical and cultural ties between India and Syria. The two countries have a deep connec- tion that dates back to when they were integral to the legendary Silk Road. This connection facilitated a vibrant cultural, linguistic and musi- cal exchange as witnessed in their common Sufi music tradition and the ancient Indo-Iranian and Indo- European Sanskrit language that originated from Syria and traveled to India. This shared heritage inspired Tabla virtuoso and Grammy Award- winning member of the Silk Road Ensemble Sandeep Das to create "The Delhi to Damascus" project, according to event organizers. For this concert, he will bring in Syrian oud master Issam Rafea, joined by Indian vocalist and sarangi player, Suhail Yusuf Khan, and sitarist Rajib Karmakar. Sandeep's collaboration with Yo-Yo Ma for The Silk Road Ensemble - Sing Me Home - won the Grammy award for Best World Music Album at the 59th Grammy Awards, 2017. About the HUM project – Harmony and Universality through Music, Sandeep said "Having per- formed and composed for Yo Yo Ma's Silk Road Ensemble and hav- ing had the added experience of per- forming for 20 years with the best artists that India has produced, I felt it was time I did something to carry forward Yo Yo Ma's idea of con- necting the world's neighborhoods again – through music and other art forms. I strongly believe that in cur- rent times one cannot live insulated lives anymore and the more we care about and share one another's trea- sures, the better it is." According to event organizers, the Delhi to Damascus project is sym- bolic of music being the universal language of love and human connec- tion. It is designed to be a reflection of our common history and embrac- ing unity over divisiveness. Admission is $22 in advance and $26 on the day of the show. Funding is provided in part by a grant from the Rhode Island State Council on the Arts. For reservations or information, call Blackstone River Theatre at 401-725-9272. Members of THE HUM ENSEMBLE are, from left, ISSAM RAFEA, RAJIB KARMAKAR, SANDEEP DAS, and SUHAIL YUSUF KHAN. Dining Guide Thanksgiving Dinner TO GO – At your house!
