4 BUSINESS OCTOBER 11-17, 2018 | VALLEY BREEZE | NORTH SMITHFIELD BLACKSTONE WOONSOCKET EDITION New venture from longtime dance studio owner NORTH SMITHFIELD – Ocean State Dance and Fitness, which opens this week in the Brigido's plaza on Victory Highway, might be a new ven- ture, but co-owner Robin Riel is no stranger to the local dance scene. Riel was previously the owner of Ocean State Dance Academy, a dance studio operating on Eddie Dowling Highway for 16 years. In 2014, she began a new career in the medical field and currently serves as site manager at Ocean State Primary Care in East Providence. It was there that she recon- nected with Jennifer Zuba, an old friend from Woonsocket, where the pair grew up and danced together in the 1980s. Riel was now teaching part-time at Krylo Dance Studio, the same studio where she started in 1979, and Zuba decided it was time to dig out her dancing shoes. "I literally put my pointe shoes on from 28 years ago, walked into a class and got right back up on my toes. Never forgot a thing," she said. One thing led to another, and soon the coworkers were talking about reopening the studio, this time with an emphasis on fitness as well as dance les- sons. They brought on Kristina Mayer, another coworker from the Ocean State Healthcare family, to help out with the business end, and the three women secured a space in the plaza on Victory Highway. The studio has opened for classes, with a grand opening planned for Oct. 14. Riel said she expects many of her old students to return for dance classes, which include instruction in everything from tap and ballet to hip hop. Like many dance studios, her own studio formed a tight-knit family through countless recitals, rehearsals and trips, one that continues on to a new genera- tion of dancers. "It's really great because now it's two generations," she said. "A lot of them are married with children and coming back with their children." This time around, the studio will also offer an emphasis on fitness, with classes in zumba and belly dancing and space available for personal trainers. With three studio spaces in addition to dressing and waiting areas, Riel hopes fitness classes might be a good fit for parents waiting to pick up their children from dance class. Call 401-742-9278.
