"Just look at someone like Shea and East Providence, which have some good teams. Every game is a battle, and it's good for the league." Resendes, who is in his third season at the helm, is coaching one of the most experienced CHS teams in recent memory, with one senior, center midfielder Aidan Bagley, playing in his fourth varsity season, and a cast of his classmates who are three-year players, and some of whom played on the North Cumberland Middle School squad that won the state title in 2014. "I'm super proud of our senior class," remarked Resendes, whose captains are midfielders Ricardo Benitez, outside back Matt Lopes, and Bagley. "They're doing all the right things. They're really buying in and doing everything we have to do." Defensively, seniors Adam Bertherman and Jon Baker "have done a great job in the back," added Resendes, who is currently minus another one of his top seniors, Cole Cayer, to an injury that shouldn't keep him out of action for long. Senior striker Julian Silva is also back and leads a bal- anced scoring attack with five goals, while junior Edwin Goncalves, Cayer, and Bagley have also put the ball in the back of the net. Junior keeper Jake Reed, junior outside back Shane Cardoso, and sophomore center back Cooper Costa are also among the returning starters, and sophomore Fensom Hensley is another underclassman to keep an eye on. Speaking of things to keep an eye on, Friday's 7 p.m. game in Portsmouth against the Patriots promises to be a must-watch attraction for high school soccer fans who can make it to Aquidneck Island. Another game to circle on the calendar is the Clippers' regular-season finale against Bishop Hendricken on Monday, Oct. 22, at 7 p.m. The state playoffs are scheduled to begin on Wednesday, Oct. 31., and the quarterfinals are scheduled two days later.
