24 SPORTS & RECREATION OCTOBER 11-17, 2018 | VALLEY BREEZE | CUMBERLAND LINCOLN EDITION CHS boys, NCMS teams win Wickham Park titles MANCHESTER, Conn. – The Cumberland High boys' and defending state champion North Cumberland Middle School boys' and girls' cross country teams cap- tured their respective champion- ships at the 35th annual Wickham Park Invitational that took place last Saturday. The CHS boys' squad, which saw senior Dan Collard and freshmen Ethan Carpenter and Henry Dennen place among the top 12 finishers in its 3.1-mile varsity race, topped 24 other teams, most of them from Connecticut, with 152 points, nine more than runner-up Fairfield Warde's 161. Collard placed ninth out of 172 runners in a time of 17:21, Carpenter took 11th place in 17:28, and Dennen was 12th in 17:34. Mike Swerdlow (57th, 18:28), John Walker (67th, 18:37), and Brendan Johnson (71st, 18:39) weren't far behind. As for the NCMS teams, both squads defended their championships from a season ago with impressive performances in their 1.7-mile races. The boys' team rolled to its title by scoring 26 points, less than a quarter of the 109 scored by the second-place team, and overwhelming a field of 44 squads. Cole McCue finished third out of 297 runners in a time of 9:58, and he was followed by Jack LaRose (6th place, 10:22), Anderson Jacinto (7th, 10:24), Sam Kucal (8th, 10:25), and Ryan Gallant (12th, 10:39). The girls' race was a lot closer, with NCMS totaling 57 points and the second-place team scoring 85. Kiley DeFusco placed third out of 301 run- ners in a time of 11:19, and NCMS's other scorers were Grace Carr (9th, 11:45), Emily Bourke (11th, 11:46), Grace Holmander (18th, 12:01), and Rose Tuomisto (22nd, 12:05). A fourth local championship was almost won by the Cumberland High boys' junior varsity team, but the Clippers, who scored 39 points, lost its race by a point to Concord, N.H. Placing in the top seven for the Clippers were Owen Enestvedt (2nd place, 18:40), Shane Johnson (5th, 18:45), Jake Gilson (6th, 18:51), and Jorge Rocha (7th, 18:54). The NORTH CUMBERLAND MIDDLE SCHOOL BOYS' AND GIRLS' CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS show off their championship trophies after tak- ing first place in their respective races at the 35th annual Wickham Park Invitational in Manchester, Conn.
