PAWTUCKET EDITION | VALLEY BREEZE | SEPTEMBER 12-18, 2018 ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL 7 Gerard Charbonneau and six other Democrats, Stephen Larbi, Joanne Bonollo, Roberto Moreno, Joseph Knight, Kimberly Grant, Erin Dube are running as a group. Democrat John Arcaro, who previously ran for mayor under the Sick of Scandals party designation, is also seeking a seat, saying he's running against the "political machine" in Pawtucket. • District 6 incumbent Councilor Tim Rudd is facing a challenge from fellow Democrat Jeffrey Appiah. Rudd says Appiah is running on many of the quality of life issues and neighborhood involvement goals that he's already living out as the district councilman. The winner here takes the seat, with no one running in November. • District 4 Councilor John Barry III is looking to fend off a challenge from two first-time candidates, pro- gressive Democrat Andrew Maguire and more traditional Democrat Joseph Flanagan. Maguire is seeking to "dream big" on a number of eco- nomic development and progressive goals, while Flanagan is focusing on a mix of maintaining the beloved tradi- tions of the city and developing new destination locations in the city. The winner takes on independent Pamela Braman in November. • In House District 58, incumbent Rep. Carlos Tobon is facing a chal- lenge from fellow Democrat Jonathan Vallecilla, who previously ran twice against Tobon as an independent. • In House District 59, incumbent Rep. Jean Philippe Barros is facing off against David Santagata in the Democratic primary. PAWTUCKET – On Aug. 15, Stephen Larbi kicked off his campaign for Pawtucket School Committee in a packed room of sup- porters at 10 Rocks restaurant. Larbi, a native of Pawtucket, received an endorsement from the Democratic City Committee and the Pawtucket Teachers Alliance. He says he is run- ning on a platform to increase inno- vation in the classroom, implement restorative practices, and expand engagement opportunities to all stu- dents who enter the Pawtucket school system. Larbi said he feels very fortunate to have grown up in Pawtucket. "I made a promise to myself that I would commit the rest of my life to the youth of our city and state," he said. Larbi attended Baldwin Elementary, Slater Junior High School, and Shea High School in Pawtucket. After graduating from Shea in 2006, he went on to earn his bachelor's degree in sociology from the University of Rhode Island, and a master's degree in public adminis- tration from Baruch College in New York. Larbi served as director of teen programs at the Boys & Girls Club of Pawtucket for 18 months before tran- sitioning to his current role as school culture coordinator of Nathanael Greene Middle School in Providence. He is an adviser to the Pawtucket Youth Commission.
