SMITHFIELD – After the Stoneman Douglas High School shooting in Parkland, Fla., in February, freshman Tori Richard and her best friend moved their seats at Smithfield High School closer to the classroom closet, and tried to picture how many students would fit inside. The pair wondered how long it would take for them to run to the windows and jump out to safety if an active shooter situation transpired in their school. At 15 years old, rising sophomore Richard represents the student voice and perspective in Gov. Gina Raimondo's Gun Safety Task Force, created to study the state's gun laws and recommend reform. "It's a scary time to be a student," she said. "When the news shows pic- tures of children hiding in classrooms with desks and textbooks that look all too similar to my own, it's very hard to go back to school the next day and not let your mind wander." She said her generation is grow- ing up in a different world, a world Smithfield seeks school safety upgrades By JACQUELYN MOOREHEAD Valley Breeze & Observer Staff Writer See SAFETY, Page 11 SCITUATE – A unique role calls for a unique person to fill it, say Scituate school officials. When doors open for the first day of school on Tuesday, Aug. 28, stu- dents at Scituate Middle and High Schools will be joined by the new joint-level vice principal, Colleen Hart. Through the administrative office in the high school building, past high school Principal Michael Hassell's desk, sits Hart, who began just after her July 10 School Committee appointment. Pawing around the newly painted light blue office is her cocker span- iel-poodle mix, Chewbacca, who lives with her in North Kingstown. Hart finished her master's of edu- cation in administration degree at Providence College in May, intern- ing with Middle School Principal Tonianne Napolitano. Returning to the school means joining the "open and welcoming" atmosphere that Napolitano and Hassell have cre- ated, she said. Hart said it's hard to tell just yet where her position will bring her, but she said the role is a good fit with her dedication to K-12 educa- tion. "It's a very unique situation," she said of overseeing two schools. Her pup, CHEWBACCA, assisted her in moving into her new office, but will not be attending classes. SMITHFIELD – The hoops are standing at the Anna McCabe Elementary School basketball courts on Pleasant View Avenue, but the nets remain unhung as the project is delayed due to problems with the concrete below. The deadline for completion was originally set for the end of June, but Town Manager Randy Rossi said officials are waiting for the contractor to fix a crack in the high- tension concrete. Other areas of the court are dipping, Rossi said, and will cause water to pool and damage the court or lead to injury. Several times at past School Committee and Town Council meet- ings, officials repeated their desire for the courts to be completed Basketball court cracks cause delays By JACQUELYN MOOREHEAD Valley Breeze & Observer Staff Writer See COURTS, Page 12 See HART, Page 6 Serving Smithfield, Scituate, Foster and Glocester FREE AUGUST 9-15, 2018 THE VALLEY BREEZE & Family Dentistry Accepting New Patients 7 Smith Avenue, Greenville Accepting New Patients Dr. Scott B.
